AUGUSTINER CHURCH | INTERIOR & FURNITUREDESIGN

IN COOPERATION MIT INFABRIC ARCHITECTS, COMPETITION 2019

For us, aesthetics paired with function and history are at the heart of the concept for the redesign of the Augustinian Church.

A key component of our design is to bring symmetry and thus peace and strength back to this place. In our design there are several levels, each of which works independently but always in interaction: floor design in conjunction with the underfloor heating, aesthetic and functional wall coverings, fixed and flexible furniture made of sustainable materials, colorful but nevertheless reduced window designs and an immaterial-looking light ceiling. To achieve this, we have reduced the existing structure to the essentials, removing certain historicizing elements: balustrade, choir stalls, pulpit, spiral staircase and the floor in the altar and choir area, which come together to form a harmonious whole through new design interventions.

Bringing purist furniture designs made of honest materials such as wood and metal into the Augustinian Church was the starting point for the design of the entire furniture.

In addition to the style elements of the paneling, the furniture designs are very calm, almost archaic in appearance. Chairs and benches are upholstered. The backrest has two precise details - the central milled Luther rose and a small folding shelf on the back. The chairs are easy to link and stack and are therefore easy to store. The mobile altar and the lectern speak the same formal language - it is kept simple from a board construction, opaque below the top plate, but the furniture remains mobile. The cross is a new interpretation of the nail cross, made from a delicate metal construction, and the mobile candlesticks in two versions also reference it. Resource-saving and sustainable, the furniture completes the new overall appearance in the Augustinian Church.
